Chicago’s Urban Prep Academy sends All of it’s Black-Male Senior Class to College

The entire senior class at Chicago’s only public all-male, all-African-American high school has been accepted to four-year colleges. At last count, the 107 seniors had earned spots at 72 schools across the nation.

Mayor Richard Daley and Chicago Public Schools chief Ron Huberman surprised students at an all-school assembly at Urban Prep Academy for Young Men in Englewood this morning to congratulate them. It’s the first graduating class at Urban Prep since it opened its doors in 2006. Huberman applauded the seniors for making CPS shine.

“All of you in the senior class have shown that what matters is perseverance, what matters is focus, what matters is having a dream and following that dream,” Huberman said.

The school enforces a strict uniform of black blazers, khaki pants and red ties — with one exception. After a student receives the news he was accepted into college, he swaps his red tie for a red and gold one at an assembly.

  1. Chris I am overwhelmed with pride for these youngmen and that the media is acknowleging their triumph. What these youngmen have accomplished happens all the time, but no one ever tells the story. I'm glad to see it make the news, its a good thing. The real story is, “Who is Tim King?”…I'm trying to find out.

  2. This is what I'm talking about… Young Black Handsome Intelligent Inspiring MEN taking control over their lives for their future… This is what we should ALL want for our children… It is absolutely imperative that we supply our children with what they need in-spite of ourselves, what he have TODAY to offer… We CANNOT and SHOULD NOT allow the powers that be to tell us what is best for our children!!! We can no longer afford to give them the tools without instructions or vice versa!!! God Bless These Young MEN! God Bless Their Families! And More Importantly, God Bless Our Future Because These Young Men Will Be And Do Big Things!!! I'll Bet My Soul On That!!!

  3. Inspiring….I'm loving the positive news about our young black men who have stayed in school, graduating and the ENTIRE (all men) senior class going on to college. I know this class will do great things. Make us proud young brothas and congratulations :-)!!
