The second week of the Buffalo Bills training camp started with a spirited full contact scrimmage at St. John Fisher College . Both defense and offensive units had their struggles during this live evening practice. The offensive line in particular just never seemed to be able to find a rhythm in two critical areas which I believe the coaching staff must address before September 8th at Ralph Wilson Stadium.
1. Short yardage Blocking- It seemed that the guards struggled all evening against the Bills Tackles. Alex Carrington, Marcell Dareus, and Jay Ross were backing the guards up all night.
2. Goal Line- The guards could not get leverage against the Bills interior defenders all night. This area will be critical in finishing drive opportunities.
3. Edge Protection- It seemed that our tackles struggled against some of the defensive packages that defensive coordinator Bob Pettine employed to disrupt the offense’s passing game.
The question is with this group of personnel can the Bills solve these issues? Since the 2013 draft I have questioned the management’s decision not to improve their interior line play by selecting some of the available players in the draft but Buddy Nix, and Doug Whaley seemed to be set on improving team speed first,
In closing, there is a great deal of excitement over the young receivers on this team such as Marquise Goodwin, TJ Graham, and Robert Wood. Keep your eye on Darick Rogers, the free agent receiver from Tennessee . This could be the steal of the draft this year. The skill set on this young man is a sight for any fan of the game of football.
